Freedom From Smoking

What Is It?
Freedom From Smoking is a smoking cessation program developed by the American Lung Association that has been helping people quit the habit for more than 30 years. It features a small-group setting led by a trained facilitator who takes participants through a step-by-step plan to quit smoking. Each session is designed to help smokers gain control over their behavior.

The group format encourages participants to work on the process and problems of quitting both individually and as part of a group. A workbook and other informative materials are provided.

Topics covered include:
  • Lifestyle changes to help you quit
  • Preparing for "quit day"
  • Managing stress
  • Avoiding weight gain
  • Developing a new self image
  • Staying smoke-free for good
How Can This Program Help Me?
The Freedom From Smoking program is designed for people who are ready and willing to quit. That doesn't mean it's easy – even those who want to quit often find it very difficult to do so. The small-group setting, led by the Springfield-Greene County Health Department's Karen James, RN, gives the participants personalized attention. At the same time, individuals benefit from the support of their peers, who are going through the same stages at the same time.

The current edition of the curriculum includes the latest research about nicotine replacement therapy (gum, inhalers, patches, lozenges and nasal spray) and other smoking cessation medications. These techniques can be used in conjunction with the Freedom From Smoking program. Because no single cessation technique is effective for all smokers, the program includes a comprehensive variety of evidence-based cessation techniques.

How Do I Sign Up?
