Water Testing

We offer private well water testing through our lab. We do not test City of Springfield water. If there is an issue or concern with City of Springfield water, please contact the Blackman Water Treatment Plant at (417)831-8820.

Testing Hours
Water samples may be dropped off for testing at the Harold K. Bengsch Building on Monday through Wednesday, from 8:00 to 5:00 pm, and Thursday, from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm, excluding holidays. Call the laboratory at (417) 864-1673 for testing schedules during holiday weeks. Contact Sharon Smith at (417) 864-1673 to request collection supplies or for questions.

Collecting Samples
We accept for testing only water samples dropped off within 48 hours of collection and 30 hours of collection for DNR samples (public drinking water) in a container that we provide. Contact the laboratory for a testing kit. Please wait until the smell and taste of chlorine is gone before collecting your sample.

To help you collect samples correctly, we've created a set of step-by-step instructions complete with photos. Download and print it here, or pick up a copy at the lab. If your test results are not satisfactory, you can "shock" your well to disinfect it. More information about process can be found in a pamphlet that is available for download or picked up at the lab.

Required Amount
The standard bacteria test only requires one bottle of water. Other tests may require additional bottles of water. Please call the laboratory staff for the specific number of bottles needed.
