Child Safe Facility Recognition
The Child Safe Facility recognition program is part of an ongoing, collaborative effort to promote the health and safety of children enrolled in child care settings. This voluntary program was designed to build on minimum licensing standards and to incorporate recommendations from Caring for Our Children: National Health and Safety Performance Standards. Child care facilities that demonstrate achievement of specific performance measures may be awarded a Child Safe Facility Certificate.

Child care facilities may have implemented some of the performance measures, and may have a written policy about some of the safety measures. Or this may be the catalyst to evaluate the five areas and to focus on a comprehensive way to make the facility child safe.

Performance Measures
Child Safe Facility distinctions are based on completing performance measures in five different areas. These include:
  • Emergency preparedness
  • Immunizations & health promotions
  • Indoor safety
  • Outdoor safety
  • Safe sleep practices

The five performance measures are divided into Bronze, Silver and Gold levels. All criteria must be complete for a specific level under each performance measure to receive the “Child Safe” designation. Resources to assist in preparation are provided by a registered nurse through consultation based upon assessment of facility.

Certificate of Recognition
After meeting criteria in each of the above areas, childcare facilities will be awarded a certificate of recognition at one of three levels of achievement. A resource manual is provided to assist the facilities in making preparations for each performance measure.
