Laboratory Services
Certification & Testing
Our unique laboratory program, located at the Harold K. Bengsch Building, combines medical and environmental laboratory programs into one. We are certified with the Food and Drug Administration, Missouri Department of Natural Resources, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments. Our pollen program is certified with the American Academy of Allergy Asthma and Immunology via the National Allergy Bureau. In addition to being certified, all laboratory programs undergo proficiency testing to ensure we are providing reliable results to clients.

Pollen Program
The Springfield-Greene County Health Department has provided pollen data to the community, news media, meteorologists and physicians since 1961. Today, we use a state-of-the-art collection system recognized and certified by the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (AAAI) and National Allergy Bureau (NAB). Pollen counts begin in February/March (Monday through Friday) and continue through the first heavy frost or Nov. 1 (whichever comes first). View current pollen count information.

Water Program
The water program tests drinking water wells for bacteria and E. coli for a minimal fee. During the summer, we also test these levels in lakes, rivers, streams, and pools. For a minimal fee, the lab also offers chemical testing, such as chlorine, nitrate, sulfate, iron, and hardness. Learn more about water testing.

Medical Program
The laboratory offers testing for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), HIV / AIDS, and tuberculosis. Express testing is a recent addition for clients who have no symptoms but want STD testing. You can submit a blood and/or urine sample for express testing, and you will be given a card with a date to return to get test results. Tests offered through express clinics include syphilis, HIV, Chlamydia, gonorrhea, trichomonas, and gram stains. For a minimal fee, you may request a Hepatitis B surface antigen test. Lead testing is available for children from southwest Missouri and Arkansas who are 6 months to 6 years of age.

Milk Program
The milk program tests raw and finished milk products from the surrounding area and Arkansas. The tests offered are bacterial counts, inhibitor testing, somatic cell counts, butterfat, and water in milk. We also check for proper pasteurization of the finished products.
