How You Can Help the Animal Shelter
Did you know there are a number of ways you can help the Animal Control program in Springfield? You'll not only help our staff do more with less, but you'll help the animals themselves - and even save a life! If you have any questions about the following ways to help, call the shelter at 833-3592.

Friends of the Springfield Pound
FOSP is a grassroots effort to improve conditions for the animals at the city pound.  The municipal shelter was built in stages beginning in the 1930’s through the 70’s and is located next to the police firing range in a flood plain.  The pound handles approximately 3,100 cats and dogs per year with a staff of 2 and very limited financial resources.

Friends of the Springfield Pound is a registered 501c3--meaning all donations are tax-deductible and kept entirely separate from city funding.

FOSP was also created to provide much needed outreach education to the community.  Although animal control officers are an excellent educational resource for the citizens they come in contact with, there are not enough of them to support an outreach program to address responsible pet ownership issues before they become an enforcement issue.  In the future with a dedicated volunteer work force, the goal is to develop education programs that can be used for school aged children as well as community groups wanting to know more about the concerns of animal welfare in the community.

Donations to FOSP can be made here.

Save A Life - Help Pay for "Pull Fees"
Springfield Animal Control works with truly dedicated and passionate animal rescue organizations who take animals from the pound and put them up for public adoption. Because the city's animal shelter (the pound) is an aging and outdated facility, we are not able to adopt to the public directly from the facility. There simply isn't enough room to do it properly.

Thankfully, our rescue partners have the expertise and ability to do this important job. And even though we strive to keep cost barriers as low as possible, rescue agencies are required to pay an $8 fee in order to "pull" an animal from the shelter. These are not merely administrative fees. This small amount of money pays for a long list of important services provided at the shelter, including:

  • Microchipping
  • Vaccinations against five common diseases
  • Worm treatments

These actions not only keep our shelter a healthier place for animals, but makes them more adoptable, too. And you can help make this happen. Anyone can donate $8 (or more if you like) to help the rescues pull more animals. Donations to FOSP can be made here.

Another great way to help is to donate a new Kuranda bed for the shelter kennels. These beds are simple, sturdy and remain clean because of the suspended design. We use them for both cats and dogs. You can
donate beds directly to our shelter online.

Donate Other Needed Items
Donations of items used to care for the animals and keep the facility clean are always welcome. Current list of items needed:
  • Bleach
  • Towels (old towels are perfect)
  • Unopened dog and cat food
  • Leashes
  • Collars, all sizes
