Traffic Signals and Management

Flashing Yellow Arrow

The City of Springfield has begun installing flashing yellow left turn arrows on traffic signals with permissive (yielding) left turning phases. Permissive left turns were previously indicated by “solid green” lights, telling the driver to yield to oncoming traffic. Due to federal mandate, the “solid green” lights may no longer be used for indicating a permissive left turn and must be replaced with flashing yellow arrows. Coordinated Signal System

The City of Springfield and MoDOT staff work together to coordinate Springfield’s busiest arterials. You can view a map of Springfield’s main coordinated signal network. Signals along these routes are coordinated with each other, as well as with signals along intersecting routes to provide the best possible traffic progression based on regular traffic behavior by time of day and day of week. There are several coordination plans that may be in operation at any given time. Aside from the signals along routes highlighted in the map, signals may be coordinated but are generally programmed to be more responsive to traffic detected at the stop bar. Traffic Signal Installation

The City of Springfield follows the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), established by the Federal Highway Administration, when evaluating the conditions which may warrant the installation of a traffic signal. These guidelines identify specific vehicular and pedestrian traffic volumes, as well as safety concerns that may warrant the installation of a traffic signal.

Pedestrian Crossings at Intersections

At signalized intersections, the use of pedestrian push buttons may be available with corresponding pedestrian signals to indicate walk and don’t walk times. For more information on the use of pedestrian signals please view the pedestrian safety flyer (PDF).

Intelligent Transportation Systems

ITS technologies improve transportation safety and mobility, reduce environmental impacts, and enhance productivity through the integration of advanced communication-based information and electronic technologies into the transportation infrastructure and vehicles. 

Springfield utilizes a combination of Greene County 911’s Computer Aided Dispatch, Advanced Traffic Controllers, Closed Circuit Television Cameras, Dynamic Message Signs, WIFI Sensors, Cell Probe Data (HERE Data), Side-Fire Radar Detection, Automatic Vehicle Location, and  Road Weather Information Systems to monitor traffic and road conditions around Southwest Missouri.

The TMC of the Ozarks provides a central hub of communication for these ITS devices. Utilizing over 100 miles of fiber optics, along with 50+ miles of wireless bridges and remote cell communication. Devices from SW Missouri, including Branson, Joplin, Clinton, and Marshfield are tied into our Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS).

Along with providing up to date traffic information to the TMC, these devices also provide real time traffic data to customers via Springfield’s OzarksTraffic and MoDOT’s Traveler Information Map. 

Advanced Traffic Management Systems

TransSuite – A centralized ITS management system that integrates incident /construction information, CCTV cameras, DMS boards, and vehicle detectors. The combination of these data sources allows the operators within the TMC to effectively assist emergency response crews at the scene of incidents, as well as inform the public about traffic issues they are approaching on the roadway.

Transparity – A centralized signal software that allows monitoring and control of signalized intersections in Springfield and throughout Southwest Missouri. Transparity provides both City and MoDOT engineering staff to program and modify signal timing in the field from the TMC as well as notifying our signal shop of communication errors, power outages, and damage to the signal system.

For up to date traffic information around the Ozarks, travelers can visit www.ozarkstraffic.com. Visitors to the site can view real time traffic cameras, see details of current traffic incidents, see traffic conditions, and locate construction affecting traffic in Southwest Missouri.

MoDOT’s Traveler Information Map

For up to date traffic information around the Missouri, travelers can visit http://traveler.modot.org/map/. Visitors to the site can view MoDOT’s construction locations, major roadway incidents, winter weather overlays, and camera/DMS/commuter lot locations across the state.
