Our Hiring Process

Step by Step Guide

STEP 1

SUBMIT A JOB APPLICATION

Once you see a job posting you are interested in, submit your application before the deadline.

STEP 2

APPLICATION IS REVIEWED BY HR

All applications are reviewed by Human Resources. You will be notified via email when the application review is complete.

STEP 3

TESTING PROCESS

If you are moving forward after the review process, you will be invited to participate in the testing process. This may include a skills test, written exam, interview, etc. 

STEP 4

ELIGIBLE LIST

You will be notified of your results. If you have passed, you will be placed on the eligible list in order of score. The top 3 scores move forward to second-round interviews.

STEP 5

CONDITIONAL JOB OFFER

The supervisor will select a candidate from the top 3 scores. If you are selected, you will receive a conditional job offer over the phone. After you receive the offer you will complete any post-offer checks that are required for the position. These may include a drug test, background check, etc. 

STEP 6

CONFIRMED JOB OFFER

Once your post-offer check results are received, Human Resources and your supervisor will give you all of the information you need to welcome you into your new career - building the Springfield community and make an impact each and every day!

The STAR Method

The City uses a behavior-based interview format. Behavior-based questions typically start with 'Tell us about a time...' or 'Please provide an example of...'

An ideal response will include a story about a previous experience that includes details of the situation, the specific responsibility you held, the steps that you took to address it, and the outcomes from these actions. 

This is the STAR method.
