Diversity, Equity & Inclusion
WHO WE ARE
The Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Office works to create a more inclusive community in Springfield, Missouri, by making sure that everyone has fair access to governmental services. By providing access to opportunities and recognizing the innate dignity and value of everyone in our community, we provide support to City personnel, elected officials, community organizations, and members of the public. Our work advances policies and solutions to minimize and ultimately eliminate the barriers that ALL residents may face. Through open communication with the community, we disseminate pertinent information and maintain accountability in fostering inclusion. We uphold the Golden Rule "do unto others as you would have them do unto you” as we listen and learn from their experiences.
WHAT WE DO
The Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Office works innovatively and deliberately to improve equitable access to opportunities in our community. The Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion serves in a critical role by advancing systemic change that culminates in an equitable transformation that is easily identifiable and measurable.
As part of the process of engaging City leadership and staff to build an inclusive workplace and model for the community, our recruitment effort is geared toward a fair representation of our community members interested in available City employment. We facilitate sessions both internally and externally to plan for more relevant, constructive, and inclusive conversations about Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion importance across all departments.
When making decisions about equity and inclusion, the City’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Office encourages genuine community engagement. The office makes recommendations to the other city departments on various aspects of community engagement processes. The office promotes Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion within the City organization and in collaboration with the community, taking the lead in analyzing city programs and city services.
We recognize the value of upholding human dignity. We encourage the public to share concern about anything that may constitute a civil rights violation or raises concerns about how people are treated in the community.
Diversity encompasses the entire human experience. Diversity is the wide spectrum of unique lived experiences that everyone possesses, expresses, and contributes.
Equity is promoting justice, impartiality, and fairness within the procedures, processes, and distribution of resources by institutions or systems. Tackling equity issues requires an understanding of the root causes of outcome disparities within our community.
Inclusion is how we make diversity work. Inclusion is the creation and support of an environment that not only accepts but celebrates differences by leveraging diversity to make stronger decisions for the greater good. Inclusive diversity is equally respectful of and embraces the unique qualities of each person.
Each of us has a role to play in developing and working toward these solutions, and we invite you to contribute to these efforts through both learning and actions. Here are some ways you can get involved through our office:
