Springfield Historic Register
Designation Criteria
A site, structure, object, or district may be designated to the Springfield Historic Register through the use of the Landmarks Zoning District if the proposed feature(s) meets one or more of the following criteria (Section 36-404 of the Springfield Zoning Ordinance):
In addition to the criteria listed above the sites, structure, object, or district will be considered in light of its suitability for preservation and reuse and its integrity of:
Site
A Historic Site is a property or structure worthy of preservation but which is of insufficient significance to merit Historic Landmark status. Properties designated as Historic Sites may not be demolished or the exterior altered unless a Certificate of Appropriateness or Certificate of Economic Hardship is granted by the Landmarks Board, or 60 days has passed since the date of application.
Landmark
A Historic Landmark is a property or structure designated by ordinance of the City Council as worthy of preservation because of its historic and/or architectural significance. Properties designated as Historic Landmarks may not be demolished or the exterior altered unless a Certificate of Appropriateness or Certificate of Economic Hardship is granted by the Landmarks Board. If the request is for a demolition permit, the applicant may also wait 180 days, at which time the demolition permit may be issued unless the City Council has extended the time for demolition. The City Council may delay demolition an additional 120 days.

- Has significant character, interest, or value as part of the city, region, state or nation; or is associated with the life of a personality significant to the past
- Is the site of a historic event with a significant effect upon the development, heritage or cultural characteristics of the city, region, state, or nation
- Exemplifies the cultural, political, economic, social, or historic heritage of the community
- Portrays the environment in the era of history characterized by a distinctive architectural style
- Embodies those distinguishing characteristics of an architectural type or engineering specimen
- Is the work of a designer or architect or contractor whose individual work has influenced the development of the city, region, or nation
- Contains elements of design, detail, materials, or craftsmanship which represent a style unique to the past
- Is part of or related to a square, park or other distinctive area and thus should be developed and preserved
- Represents an established and familiar visual feature of the neighborhood, community, or skyline, owing to its unique location or singular physical characteristic
- Is part of or related to distinctive, geographical area which should be developed or preserved according to a plan based on cultural, historic or architectural motif
- Has yielded, based upon physical evidence, or is likely to yield information important to history or prehistory

- Location
- Materials
- Setting
- Workmanship
