Health Department launches streamlined process and online applications for food establishments

To better meet the need for food establishment permits, Springfield-Greene County Health has launched a new online, paperless permit application process. Now, anyone interested in operating a food establishment in Greene County can apply for a permit using the new streamlined permitting process. Food establishments that require permits to operate in Greene County include:

  • Restaurants, concession stands and bars.
  • Retail stores selling food.
  • Schools, hospitals and living facilities that prepare and serve food.
  • Food trucks.
  • Farmer’s market vendors.
  • Temporary events serving food.

In the past 12 months, the Health Department has reviewed nearly 200 applications for new food establishments or changes of ownership for existing establishments. Properly completing these applications and conducting the inspections that go along with them is a time-consuming process for both the applicant and the Health Department and can be difficult for new applicants to navigate.

Not only will this be a more streamlined, easy-to-use process for the community, but also the Health Department. “Convenience of use for the customer and reducing additional data entry is a win-win situation we could not pass up,” said Environmental Health Program Coordinator Eric Marcol.

The food permit application is available now at health.springfieldmo.gov. Those without access to internet or who need assistance completing the application can call 417-864-1017 to schedule an appointment to use the new application station at the Health Department’s Environmental Health Services office at 320 E Central Street in Springfield between the hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
