FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
At 9:49 p.m. on Oct. 6, a crash occurred near the intersection of National Avenue and Bear Boulevard. Officers from the Springfield Police Department responded and conducted an investigation. The initial investigation determined that a 1995 Mazda pickup, being operated by John Gideon, 52, of Springfield, was southbound on National when a pedestrian Robert T. Urton, 21, of Springfield, was struck by the pickup. On Oct. 15, at 9:38 a.m., Urton died as a result of injuries received in the crash. At this time, no traffic or criminal charges are anticipated to be filed.
This marks the 18th death in the City of Springfield, resulting from 17 traffic crashes. In October of last year, the 2014 year-to-date total of fatalities from crashes was 11.
