Springfield police responded to a convenience store located at 2101 S. Glenstone Ave. at approximately 1:22 a.m. today, Jan. 3, after a 911 caller stated a person had been shot. Upon arrival at the convenience store, officers located a male victim outside the store that had injuries consistent with a gunshot wound. The victim, identified as Brendan Riggs, 25, of Lebanon, Mo., was transported to Mercy Hospital where he later died. During the investigation, officers identified and located the person responsible for the shooting who was still at the scene. The suspect voluntarily went with police for questioning at that time, but he has since been released pending further investigation into the circumstances surrounding the altercation. No charges have been filed.
Detectives continue to investigate and are asking anyone who has information about this incident to contact the Springfield Police Department at 417-864-1810 or make an anonymous call to Crime Stoppers at 417-869-TIPS (8477).
Next of kin notifications have been made for the victim. An autopsy will be conducted by the Greene County Medical Examiner’s Office.
