The fourth quarter of 2015 saw an overall increase in crime by 4.5 percent. This is in comparison to the crime statistics of October through December 2014, and it is shown in the Springfield Police Department’s latest Quarterly Public Safety Report.
Crimes against persons increased by 14 percent compared to the fourth quarter of last year, while property crime increased by 3 percent. The 14 percent increase in the reported violent crimes are attributed to larger numbers of reported robberies (102 to 121 incidents) and aggravated assaults during this quarter (from 308 to 362 incidents).
This report also features information about the Springfield Police Department’s expansion of the use of social media. In addition to being active on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube and Periscope, the department is now using Nextdoor regularly to interact with neighborhoods about crime trends or things to be aware of that are unique to the specific area in which they live.
The SPD began publishing the Quarterly Public Safety Report in October 2013 to increase awareness about public safety issues in the community. In addition to providing crime statistics, the report provides information on innovative programs and highlights of crime prevention strategies.
