FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Springfield Police Department responded to 1053 S. Thelma Ave. at approximately 1:34 a.m. on Jan. 28, 2016, after a 911 caller stated a person had been stabbed. Officers located a male victim inside the home who had injuries consistent with knife wound. The victim was transported to a Mercy Hospital where he was treated for what, at that time, were believed to be non-life threatening injuries. During the investigation, officers identified and located the suspect still at the scene.
Eight days later on Feb. 5, the victim died at Mercy Hospital. On Feb. 8, the Greene County Medical Examiner’s Office conducted an autopsy on the victim's body. On April 21, the Greene County Medical Examiner ruled the death as a homicide. The Greene County Medical Examiner concluded that the victim died of adult respiratory distress syndrome and septic shock due to healthcare-associated pneumonia due to post-operative complications of a stab wound.
The victim was identified as Neal Williams, 43, of Springfield. Next of kin notifications for the victim were made. The suspect has been identified, but no arrest has been made. Detectives began their investigation on Jan. 28, and the investigation continues.
