The first quarter of 2016 saw an overall increase in crime by 10 percent. This is in comparison to the crime statistics of January through March 2015, and it is shown in the Springfield Police Department’s latest Quarterly Public Safety Report.
Crimes against persons increased by 9 percent compared to the first quarter of last year, while property crime increased by approximately 10 percent. The increase in the reported violent crimes are attributed to a continuing rise in aggravated assaults during this quarter (from 297 to 365 incidents). Domestic violence still tends to be a major factor involved in many of these incidents. A 32 percent increase in burglaries alone played a major role in the increase of property crime during this quarter.
This report also features information about the Springfield Police Department’s use of Police Area Representative (PAR) Officers as part of its community policing philosophy. The six PAR Officers serve as liaisons throughout the City, working with residents and business owners to proactively identify problems and come up with long-term solutions to those problems that may be unique to the area.
The SPD began publishing the Quarterly Public Safety Report in October 2013 to increase awareness about public safety issues in the community. In addition to providing crime statistics, the report provides information on innovative programs and highlights of crime prevention strategies.
