The City of Springfield Department of Environmental Services is teaming up with the Discovery Center of Springfield to host an America Recycles Day event, 1-5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 5 at the Discovery Center, 438 E. St. Louis Street.
Admission will be free to visitors thanks to a sponsorship by the Department of Environmental Services. Visitors are invited to explore the many green features of the Center, including the LEED Gold Certified elements of the west building and exhibits created from repurposed materials.
Hands-on activities will focus on recycling and repurposing including a composting activity, recycled building challenge and making bracelets from plastic shopping bags. Employees from Environmental Services will be available to share information about recycling options available throughout the community.
Visitors will also have the opportunity to meet several community recycling partners including Nestle Purina, Complete Electronics Recycling, Midwest Fibre Sales, Bedhead Mattress Recycling, and Ozarks Headwaters Recycling and Materials Management District.
This is the fifth year the City and Discovery Center have hosted America Recycles Day, reaching more than 2,500 Springfield children and their parents with a message to reduce, reuse, repurpose and recycle in order to keep the community clean and educate new generations of environmental stewards.
“Environmental Services enjoys sponsoring America Recycles Day at the Discovery Center because it is such a perfect match of community educational goals,” says Environmental Services Education Outreach Specialist Laurie Duncan. “We are not only able to increase awareness of recycling resources within the community, but this is one of only a few times a year families can access the wealth of hands-on science experiences at the Discovery Center for free.”
America Recycles Day, a program of Keep America Beautiful, is the only nationally recognized day dedicated to promoting and celebrating recycling in the United States. Every year on or around November 15 (America Recycles Day), millions turn out to thousands of local events held throughout the country to celebrate and learn more about their recycling programs.
