Public Safety

• A string of preventable fires in the last week serves as reminder to take fire hazards seriously. There were a total of five accidental fires in homes over the last several days, causing more than $105,000 in damage and one injury. In three of the fires, combustibles were stored too close to heat sources. In the fourth fire, a man was trying to light his gas stove when it flashed and burnt his face and hand. In a fire last Thursday, the owner was using three space heaters to heat a detached metal building. One of the heaters caught nearby trash on fire and it spread into the attic. Space heaters are meant to be used one at a time and are only meant to heat a small space. They should be turned off when you leave the room. For fire prevention tips, visit springfieldmo.gov/fire.

The Polar Plunge offers a chance for you to come out of hibernation, grab some friends and take a dip in frigid winter waters to raise money for a great cause – the Special Olympics.
