FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Springfield police officers were dispatched to a fatality crash at 311 W. Central at 1:58 a.m. on April 7. A 2012 Hyundai Sonata operated by Matthew Combs, 27, of Springfield, was traveling westbound at a high rate of speed when it left the roadway and struck a building. Also in the vehicle was Katherine Levere, 25, of Springfield. Combs was pronounced dead at the scene. Levere was transported to a local hospital and was listed in critical condition. Next of kin has been notified. It is unknown at this time if intoxicants were a factor, and the investigation is ongoing.
The westbound lane of Central between Campbell and Boonville is still closed, but the eastbound lane has reopened.
This marks the fifth fatality crash in Springfield for 2018.
