City celebrates America Recycles Day with free coffee, doughnuts and a movie

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CustomerAppreciationCity of Springfield Environmental Services will celebrate America Recycles Day 2019 with another installment of the EnviroFlick movie series, Thursday, Nov. 14 at the Moxie Cinema, followed by a Nov. 15 Customer Appreciation Day at the Lone Pine and Franklin Avenue Recycling Centers.

America Recycles Day, a program of Keep America Beautiful, is the only nationally recognized day dedicated to promoting and celebrating recycling in the United States. Every year on or around Nov. 15 (America Recycles Day), local events are held throughout the country to celebrate and learn more about recycling programs.

“Our community continues to produce more and more waste and over 70% of what’s sitting in our landfill could have actually been recycled,” says Education and Outreach Coordinator Laurie Duncan. “America Recycles Day is a day to bring attention to the practice of recycling on a regular basis and encourage residents to divert as much material through our recycling centers and curbside recycling as possible.”

On Thursday, Nov. 14, Environmental Services will host another edition of the EnviroFlick free movie screening series, this time featuring “Just Eat It: A food waste story,” at 7 – 9:30 p.m. at the Moxie Cinema, 305 S. Campbell, Suite 101. Attendees are encouraged to stick around after the screening to learn more about ways our community is tackling food waste.

8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 15, recyclers are invited to enjoy free coffee, doughnuts and giveaways at the Lone Pine Recycling Center (3020 S. Lone Pine Ave.) and Franklin Avenue Recycling Center (731 N. Franklin Ave.).

“This is just a small way of saying thank you to those who are doing their part to help divert waste from our landfill and promote sustainability in the community,” says Duncan. “It’s also a fabulous opportunity for our staff to connect with recyclers, provide resources and share ideas.”

About “Just Eat It: A Food Waste Story”

"Just Eat It" follows food lovers Jen and Grant as they pledge to quit grocery shopping and survive only on foods that would otherwise be thrown away. The film looks at our society’s focus on expiration dates, perfect produce and portion sizes and examines the impact that focus has around the globe. Stick around after the screening to learn more about ways our community is tackling food waste.

This documentary portrays a unique and eccentric perspective on the topic of food waste and food rescue in our global society and is presented for the purpose of stimulating discussion in our own community. The thoughts and opinions shared are those of the creators and do not necessarily reflect those of the City of Springfield.

This film is not rated. For those with kids, 10+ is the recommended viewing age.

About Springfield’s Integrated Solid Waste Management System

The Lone Pine Avenue and Franklin Avenue Recycling Centers are part of the City’s voter-approved Integrated Solid Waste Management System, which manages and reduces Springfield’s waste stream. The system is funded primarily by landfill fees and the sale of mulch and compost products at the Yardwaste Recycling Center. The system includes the City’s sanitary landfill, three recycling dropoff centers, Yardwaste Recycling Center, Household Chemical Collection Center, and Public Education and Market Development Programs. Curbside recycling is offered by private solid waste service providers.
