City and SPS to host 30th annual Treasures of the City event Thursday evening

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Second-grade students and their families will tour the City’s Government Plaza Thursday evening while they treasure-hunt for knowledge of municipal government at the 30th annual "Treasures of the City" event, hosted by the City of Springfield and Springfield Public Schools.

The event will take place 5-8:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct.17 at the Busch Municipal Building, 840 Boonville Ave. Designed to complement the students’ social studies curriculum, Treasures of the City brings concepts discussed in the classroom to life as students interact with elected officials and government employees at interactive displays set up throughout the Busch Municipal Building and Historic City Hall.

Second-graders follow clues to learn about each department’s responsibilities that eventually lead them to City Council Chambers, where they will meet Mayor Ken McClure and other City Council members and have an opportunity to take a photo with them.

Springfield Police, Fire, Public Works and Environmental Services will have a display of vehicles set up in the parking lot between the Health Department and Historic City Hall. SPD’s Cold Patrol will also be on-hand with frozen treats for families to enjoy once they finish their treasure hunt.

“We are very excited to host this 30th annual Treasures of the City event,” says Director of Public Information & Civic Engagement Cora Scott. “While the event and the target age for this curriculum has grown and changed over the years, its core mission hasn’t – to engage with elementary school students and their families on the local government level.”
