Springfield Police Investigate Hwy 65 Crash involving Four Vehicles
On October 17, 2020, at 10:39 p.m., officers with the Springfield Police Department responded to the 49.6-mile marker of northbound U.S. Highway 65 regarding a motor vehicle crash involving four vehicles.
The investigation indicated a gold Chevrolet Malibu was traveling north on Eastgate from Sunshine then accelerated rapidly and veered across the southbound lane of travel and through a fence onto the northbound lanes of 65. The Malibu rolled before coming to rest on its wheels facing southbound in the northbound lanes of US 65. The vehicle was then struck head-on by a Volkswagen traveling northbound. Two additional vehicles traveling northbound attempted to stop but were unable to, striking the Malibu and Volkswagen.
The driver of the Malibu, 17-year-old Cole David Tedford, of Springfield, MO died as a result of his injuries. The driver of the Volkswagen was transported to a local hospital with moderate, but non-life-threatening injuries.
Officers with the department’s Traffic Section are continuing to investigate the circumstances involved in the crash. Next of kin has been notified. Speed and other circumstances seem to be a contributing factor in this crash. This is the 19th fatality motor vehicle crash and the 21st total crash-related death of 2020 for Springfield.
