MEDIA ALERT: City to host follow-up information session on Fassnight Creek Stormwater Project June 9

MEDIA ALERT

The City of Springfield will host a second public information session 6:00 - 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, June 9 to provide clarity and further opportunity for discussion regarding the upcoming Fassnight Creek Stormwater Improvement Project at the Springfield Art Museum. This will be a combined in-person and virtual event with limited capacity available in the Art Museum auditorium as well as opportunities to view and participate virtually through livestream and facebook live.

The public is encouraged to view the session and submit questions via facebook live on the City’s page or via livestream at springfieldmo.gov/SAMstormwater.

Due to COVID-19 and in concurrence with current occupancy guidelines for retail businesses, in-person attendance will be limited to 25 participants on a first-come, first-served basis. A security officer with a counter stationed at the front door will admit attendees according to Art Museum COVID-19 procedures. Attendees will be encouraged to practice appropriate physical distancing by sitting at least 6 feet apart throughout the auditorium. Those exhibiting symptoms consistent with COVID-19 will be asked to return home and not enter the Museum per the City’s COVID-19 policy.

Media are encouraged to text questions during the event to Cora Scott at 417-380-3352.

The public comment period for this project has been extended to Friday, June 19. Visit springfieldmo.gov/SAMstormwater to view a recording of the information sessions and submit an online comment card.

About the Project:

As part of the Springfield Art Museum Master Plan, construction of stormwater improvements to Fassnight Creek are planned to begin this summer along Brookside Drive, between National Avenue and Kings Avenue. Improvements will involve the restoration of the creek to a naturalized channel with the goal of reducing the risk of flooding to the Art Museum and surrounding residential properties and for the benefit of flood mitigation, water quality and the creation of habitat for native birds and pollinators.

In conjunction with the stormwater project, transportation and recreation opportunities to Phelps Grove Park and the Art Museum will be improved through the future construction of a multi-use trail connection, planned for construction in fall 2021.
