FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
International Firefighters’ Day is observed on May 4 each year and is an opportunity to show appreciation for the sacrifices firefighters make around the world ensuring the health and safety of their communities. This day is symbolized with ribbons that are blue (representing water) and red (representing fire).
At the Springfield Fire Department, our 236 members assume many roles including: firefighting, emergency medical response, technical rescue, hazardous materials response, public education, fire investigation, fire inspection and administrative support.
There are many ways you can celebrate your Springfield firefighters! Here are some ideas:
- Be responsible for fire safety in your home. Check your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide monitors, declutter, practice your escape plan.
- Foster a culture of safety and prevention. Protect those who are protecting you by reducing their need to respond.
- Shine Your Light. Light your home in red on this day.
- Thank them when you see them!
