Motor Vehicle Crash with Injury
On July 6th, 2021, at 9:30 p.m., officers with the Springfield Police Department responded to the intersection of Campbell Ave. and Commercial St. regarding a motor vehicle crash.
A 2016 Toyota 4Runner being driven by a juvenile male was northbound on Campbell Ave. crossing Commercial St. The vehicle crossed several sets of railroad tracks and struck the side of an eastbound train. The vehicle was dragged alongside the train from there to Washington Ave, where it caught fire. The driver suffered serious burns but was able to exit the vehicle and was taken to a local hospital, where he is currently listed in critical condition.
The eastbound train derailed due to the crash and that caused a 2nd train that was westbound to derail. The bridge over Washington Street also sustained damage, and as a result Washington Street has been closed between Commercial and Atlantic and will remain so for an unknown length of time.
The investigation as to the circumstances involved in the crash is ongoing.
