Each year the Springfield-Greene County Health Department encourages men to grow a mustache as a conversation starter and a personal commitment to their health through the month of November. This year’s theme is “What’s Your MOtivation?” - a reminder that there are a variety of factors that motivate men to make changes to improve their health.
“My motivation is my three children,” said Assistant Health Director Jon Mooney. “I take steps to make sure I can be there for them, both now and for years to come.”
On average, men in Greene County die about five years sooner than women. Movember—a combination of the word mustache and November—uses facial hair to encourage men to be aware of and do something about some of the specific health issues that may affect them.
The Health Department is encouraging men to pick one thing they can do this month to improve their health. This year, #MOvemberSGF is specifically focusing on encouraging men to take steps to catch cancer early, talk about mental health challenges, move more and get a COVID-19 vaccine.
Men are encouraged to let us know what their “MOtivation” is by snapping a selfie and using #MOvemberSGF on social media. They can also use one of our Facebook profile frames, which can be found at MOvemberSGF.org.

Catch cancer early
Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men in the United States. Testicular cancer is the most common cancer for men 15-34 years old. Catching these cancers in the earlier stages can help improve the success of treatment. What you can do:
• Schedule your annual physical in November.
• Learn how to do a self-test for testicular cancer at MOvemberSGF.org.
Talk about it
We know that men are carrying a lot of extra mental weight, especially in the midst of COVID-19. Navigating work, family and health is challenging during this time. Reaching out is crucial. Especially now. What you can do:
• Talk to a trusted friend or family member about what’s bugging you.
• Schedule an appointment with a counselor.
Regular physical activity is one of the most important things you can do for your health! It has many benefits like reducing depression and anxiety and even small changes can help you live a longer life. What you can do:
• Start by taking the stairs more often or taking a walk around the block.
• Add some adventure by exploring one of Springfield’s many trails listed at MOvemberSGF.org.
• Try something new, like yoga or rock climbing. You can start small!
Get your COVID-19 Vaccine
According to the CDC, 57% of deaths caused by COVID-19 have been men. The COVID-19 vaccines are one of the safest and most effective ways to combat COVID-19 and it is recommended for teens and adults. What you can do:
• Schedule an appointment to get the COVID-19 vaccine.
