FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Construction of a multi-use trail connection through Phelps Grove Park is set to begin Wednesday, Oct. 19. Contractor Radmacher Brothers Excavating Co. is beginning to mobilize equipment and materials for the start of construction activities.
The trail connection will begin at Clay Avenue, continue east through Phelps Grove Park and end at Brookside Drive near the Art Museum main entrance. The new 1,600 linear-foot path will include ADA ramps and will connect to shared bike lanes on Brookside Drive over a new pedestrian bridge.
Park visitors should expect the concrete trail running east to west, adjacent the Phelps Grove Park Pavilion, to be closed for a significant portion of project construction. Interruptions to the asphalt walking trail circling the park will be minimal. No trees will be disturbed as part of the project.
“Thanks to our partners with the Ozarks Transportation Organization, Ozark Greenways, Inc., the Springfield-Greene County Park Board and Springfield Art Museum for working with us to receive this grant funding and to complete this important trail connection,” said Public Works Project Manager Joe Hamp.
Project construction is expected to take approximately four months at a cost of $460,000. It will be funded through federal Surface Transportation Block Grant (STBG) funds with the City of Springfield providing a 20% match through the 1/8-cent Transportation Sales Tax.
