FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Following years of monitoring crash rates and safety concerns at Grand Street west of the Campbell Avenue intersection, Springfield Public Works is set to construct a median that will restrict left turns on and off of Grand Street and improve safety.
Construction is expected to begin at 6 a.m., Monday, Nov. 14 and last approximately one week (weather permitting). Eastbound and westbound traffic on Grand Street will be reduced to one lane in each direction throughout construction.
In a recent crash rate analysis, 20 crashes were found to be reported at this location over a 30-month period, with 13 crashes being attributed to left turns in and out of private driveways. This data does not include an unknown number of unreported incidents and regularly observed close calls. Although no fatalities were recorded during the study period, six of the reported crashes resulted in injuries.
Public Works plans to construct a relatively low-cost median, with updated signing and striping, that will prevent all left turn movements across traffic in the area. The project is expected to cost approximately $25,000, funded through the 1/8-Cent Transportation Sales Tax Program.
