FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Ahead of the Aug. 2 primary election, and the November general election, the City of Springfield would like to remind candidates and their supporters of the laws surrounding political signage. Details are found in City Code Section 36-454 (4) (a),
Location:
Political signs are not allowed in public rights-of-way.
Public right-of-way means the area on, below, or above a public roadway, highway, street, public sidewalk, alley or waterway. Public right-of-way usually includes the area from the street curb to the inside edge of the public sidewalk (see Powerpoint for example).
Political signs are allowed on private property with the permission of the property owner.
Size:
The maximum size allowed in a non-business area is six square feet. Business areas may have a sign up to 34-square feet in size.
Removal:
Signs must be removed within 48 hours after the election.
Public Works and Building Development Services staff both proactively and on a complaint basis remove political signs clearly in the public right-of-way and take them to a storage location for pickup by candidates and supporters outside the salt dome in the Phil Broyles Complex, 1111 W. Chestnut Expressway, 6 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Friday.
To report a violation, please contact the Citizen Resource Center at 417-864-1010, or submit a service request at https://www.springfieldmo.gov/request or through the City’s mobile app at GoSpringfieldMO.
