1. Who is eligible for the NeighborWoods Program?

The groups that are eligible for a NeighborWoods planting are: Springfield neighborhood organizations, Springfield residents, Springfield businesses, and Springfield Public Schools.

2. What is my obligation?

As a project participant:
You will be responsible for maintenance of the newly established tree(s) for 3-5 years. Tree maintenance consists of routine watering, keeping the mulch ring free of weeds, and regular inspections. More information is available in the NeighborWoods Tree Care Maintenance Schedule.
As a project contact person:
You are responsible for collecting all NeighborWoods Tree Permits for your project then compiling the site maps onto a single map. In addition, you will recruit participants, work with the NeighborWoods Coordinator, and make sure the application is complete.

3. When are the trees planted?

There are two planting seasons- Spring and Fall. Spring is March/April. Fall is November/December. The planting season is dependent on the timeline when your application is complete. Please refer to the Important Dates section of the Program Guidelines.

4. What species of tree can I plant?

The Tree Species Selection List is changed annually to increase the diversity of our urban forest. The Tree Species Selection list can be found under the NeighborWoods Application heading.

5. How big are the trees when they are planted?

The trees that are planted for the NeighborWoods program will be 1-2”caliper in size for deciduous trees (5-8’tall) and 4-6’in height for evergreen trees.

6. Does this program cost me anything?

No, the program doesn't cost participants any money only commitment of time. The tree purchase and planting is paid for by the City of Springfield.
