Hazelwood Cemetery

1. What are the hours at Hazelwood Cemetery?: The cemetery is always open. The office is open Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. During Memorial Day weekend only, the Hazelwood office is open Saturday, Sunday & Monday to assist those visiting the cemetery, providing maps, directions, lot sale information, etc.

4. When are the annual clean up dates?: The second week of March, June, and September. Any items or arrangements you wish to keep needs to be removed prior to and replaced after the first week of the indicated months.

5. Can I look up a grave location on this website?: Not at this time. Call our office at (417) 891-1660 and we will be happy to assist you. There are sites on-line that may be helpful (ie: www.FindAGrave.com) but we cannot guarantee the accuracy of the information they provide.

If I have an immediate need for a grave space to bury my loved one? No, we are happy to assist any immediate need to purchase spaces without an appointment.
To purchase a pre-planned grave space? An appointment is appreciated to ensure someone will be in the office to assist you. Call (417) 891-1660

8. I don't have a printer. Where can I get a map of Hazelwood?: 1642 E. Seminole, at Hazelwood Cemetery office, located inside the cemetery. Turn left on 10th Street and go in the small brick building.

9. When was Hazelwood purchased by the City?: The City of Springfield purchased the original 80 acres in 1867 from the Hazeltine & Woods families. Immediately following, 15 acres were sold to the federal government for the creation of the National Cemetery for our fallen soldiers.

10. Can I plant flowers/shrubs around my loved one's gravesite & monument?: All plantings must be approved by Hazelwood Administration office. SHRUBS AND ROSE BUSHES ARE NOT ALLOWED. Persons wishing to plant trees must obtain a tree permit from the Hazelwood office.

11. Can I bring my pet to the cemetery?: Dogs are not allowed.
Per City Ordinance Sec. 30-37.: Dogs prohibited.
"It shall be unlawful to bring or allow any dog onto the property of the Hazelwood Cemetery at any time without prior approval. This section does not apply to a guide or assistance dog used by a handicapped person; however, the guide or assistance dog must be properly leashed." (G.O. No. 5100, § 1, 7-23-2001)

12. Who's Who ? Are there any notables buried at Hazelwood?: There is not ONE UNIMPORTANT person buried here, but there are several whose names you might recognize:
John Polk Campbell - (founder of Springfield)
Sempronius Boyd - (City Attorney, Mayor of Springfield, Congressman, Colonel in the Civil War, Circuit Judge, and Consul to Siam [now known as Thailand])
Payne Stewart (famed golfer ) Cenotaph only
Lester E. Cox (Radio & TV station owner, huge contributor of the Burge School of Nursing and hospital leader.)
Herbert & Melba Leonard - (Springfield’s Steak n Shake)
Don and Betty Wessel - (Don Wessel Honda)
Gee “The Captain” Leong – (Made Springfield’s Cashew Chicken what it is today!)
Harry Cooper – (Founder of Harry Cooper Supply Company )
